The Tottenham defender found the net twice as Tottenham extended their unbeaten run on the road in the top division and handed the Toffees their first defeat at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Everton were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their recently opened stadium at the dockside location, having left Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the end of last season.

But Tottenham's leader the Dutchman pounced on two occasions from set-pieces in the opening 45 minutes to place their strong form at risk, and they were unable to turn it around before Pape Matar Sarr - set up by former Toffees attacker Richarlison - nodded in a third to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien thought he had equalized the scores five minutes after Van de Ven's opener, glancing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an set-piece.

Beto, meanwhile, missed a handful of chances, while Vicario made a series of excellent stops to guarantee the London club went five matches on the road without defeat in the Premier League.

But the video assistant referee intervened, instructing Craig Pawson to check the score on the screen and the referee decided that the winger and Iliman Ndiaye were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

This victory moves the manager's side up to third in the division, a handful of points off local foes and table-toppers the Gunners.

Everton remain 14th and sit six points ahead of the relegation zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven fulfils role at each end of the field

After a drab midweek performance in the Champions League against the French side, where they mustered a mere attempts on target, the manager opted for the French striker in attack instead of ex-Everton forward the Brazilian.

The summer signing was failed to influence the game before being replaced for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it emerged he wasn't needed in the final outcome.

Defender the Dutchman transformed into an attacking force to be feared.

Spurs' first goal came from a well-worked corner routine, with Rodrigo Bentancur heading the ball toward the six-yard box for an free the defender to head home.

And Ven de Ven - stepping up as captain in the Argentine's absence - notched his next goal in added time as he outjumped Jordan Pickford to head home.

Van de Ven was equally outstanding in defence, combining well with his defensive colleague as the duo dealt superbly with the numerous deliveries thrown their way by the opposition.

Everton analysis: Toffees missing striker's instinct

Everton's recent stadium had been a happy hunting ground, but it appears the freshness may have worn off slightly and supporters headed to the gates after the midfielder's third for Tottenham.

The end in the team's winning streak at home will not be a major worry for the manager, but their striker situation will be.

Beto and the other striker - the Toffees' two established centre-forwards - had scored only one league goal combined before Sunday's outing.

And they were unable to contribute to that poor record on a wet and gloomy evening on Merseyside.

The striker's form was epitomized when he opted to overhead kick a golden opportunity from near the goal, even with having room and opportunity to reposition for a simpler attempt that would have tested Vicario.

Barry, as well, failed to influence the game after coming on for the starter in the 65th minute.

It was not for a shortage of opportunity. The majority of Everton's attacks came through Grealish and Ndiaye, who relentlessly delivered threatening balls into the Tottenham box.
